British and Irish Lions backliner Riki Flutey will give England boss Martin Johnson a boost for the New Year by returning to playing rugby this week. England star Flutey has finally regained fitness after shoulder surgery and is set to play in what will be just his second game for French club Brive. Flutey has declared himself fit and should return to playing just 48 hours after England full-back Delon Armitage made his first start for London Irish after recovering from the same injury. Brive must travel for Clermont Auvergne for a Top14 clash and England's top try scorer in the 2009 Six Nations, said:
"I think I can play and I'm really looking forward to it.
"I will do my best. I hope to bring my experience and knowledge to the team and help to build our game plan." he told the Mirror.
Flutey and Armitage scored seven of England's 16 tries in last season's Six Nations which is an indication of the influence the duo had on the England team. While the two were out of action due to injuries in the three autumn Tests England only managed to score just one try. Another concern for England was that they were not able to find suitable understudies capable of wearing their No.12 and 15 shirts as neither Shane Geraghty nor Ugo Monye were able to impress as much as Johnson would have liked.
