France Records in Six Nations

France competes annually in the Six Nations Championship, which is played against five other European nations: England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. France first contested the tournament in 1910 when the Home Nations became the Five Nations. France were expelled from the tournament due to rumours of professionalism in the then-amateur sport in 1932, but rejoined in 1947. They first won the competition in 1954, sharing the championship with both England and Wales. France shared with Wales again the following season, and won it outright for the first time in 1959. France's longest wait for a championship spanned 37 tournaments (1910–1954). The Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy is also contested between France and Italy during the Six Nations. They are the third highest winning nation, nine tournaments behind England. However, it should be taken into account the France have been present in 30 less tournaments than the Home Nations.Buy & Sell Six Nations Tickets please visit YourTicketMarket.com. History Of England Rugby Team

The history of the team extends back to 1871 when the English rugby team played their first official Test match, losing to Scotland by one try. England dominated the early Home Nations Championship (now the Six Nations) which started in 1883. Following the schism of rugby football in 1895, England did not win the Championship again until 1910. England first played against New Zealand in 1905, South Africa in 1906, and Australia in 1909. England was one of the teams invited to take part in the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987 and went on to appear in the final in the second cup in 1991 only to be defeated by Australia. Following their 2003 Six Nations Grand Slam, England won that year's World Cup — beating Australia 20–17 in extra time. They also contested the final in 2007 but finished as runners up, losing 15–6 to South Africa. England players traditionally wear white shorts, navy socks (although they are now white and red) with white tops, and a white shirt with a red rose embroidered on it, and for the first time in the English rugby team's history, their away shirt is red (up until recently, navy blue has been the traditional colour). Their home ground is Twickenham Stadium where they first played in 1910. The team is administered by the Rugby Football Union (RFU). Four former players have been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame. To Buy & Sell Six Nations Tickets please visit YourTicketMarket.com. One stop shop to catch your favorite event. England 74-0 Wales

Once Rob Purdham went over after seven minutes for the opening score of the game, Tony Smith's side were dominant.
There were two tries apiece for captain Martin Gleeson, Shaun Briscoe, Paul Sykes and young Salford scrum-half Richie Myler.
Mark Calderwood, Tony Clubb, Gareth Hock, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Peter Fox also crossed.
It was England's biggest-ever win over Wales and was achieved without the St Helens and Leeds players who were involved in last weekend's Grand Final.
Smith's side, featuring eight players who will be part of the World Cup squad, looked the sharper from the start as they tormented the Wales defence.
Mickey Higham at dummy-half created the opportunities for Gleeson to capitalise from stand-off.
Purdham, on his full international debut, sidestepped through before Briscoe took Gleeson's pass to go over and then Sykes opened his account.
Gleeson, who scored a hat-trick in the mid-season international against France, made the most of the space afforded to him before Myler got the first of his two tries.
Wales had no answer to Calderwood's pace on the wing and he set Sykes free to cross before Gleeson added his second.
The visitors trailed 36-0 when they created their first clear-cut scoring chance but centre Aled James, one of seven Celtic Crusaders players, was denied by the video referee.
It took England less than a minute of the second half to extend their lead, with a Hock offload enabling substitute Tony Clubb to mark his debut with his first touch.
Hock quickly followed Clubb over the line and Myler then finished a Purdham break for his second try.
McCarthy-Scarsbrook went over from close range before Myler carved out a second try for Briscoe and winger Fox put the seal on an emphatic win.

England coach Tony Smith:
"It was a game that we needed for players to blow a few cobwebs out of the system and we came though unscathed, which is an extra bonus.
"They enhanced their chances, which is good, because I want as many selection headaches as I can get.
"There was also valuable experience gained for a lot of the young guys. I can't speak highly enough of the spirit in the group."

Wales coach John Dixon:
"It's not a good day for us in terms of the score but in terms of long-term development this is a starting point.
"We've had a wonderful week. We've got a group of kids here who have come out of the National Conference and, to see them compete as well as they did, we can only grow from here.
"I thought the attitude and demeanour was terrific and so was the effort for 80 minutes. We were just beaten by the better team."

Simpson may miss start of Six Nations Rugby

Joe Simpson (born 5 July 1988) is a rugby union player who plays scrum half for London Wasps and the England Six Nations Rugby union team. On the day it was reported England would embark on their longest summer tour in more than a decade, Martin Johnson was given a sharp reminder of the modern game's propensity to consign his men to the treatment table. Joe Simpson is many experts' idea of the best No 9 currently playing in England but the brilliant
young Wasp seems certain to miss the start of the Six Nations Championship. The 21-year-old
dislocated his shoulder against Harlequins at Twickenham on Sunday and was due to see the medics yesterday to determine whether he need an operation.

If Simpson does require the knife he will miss the entire Championship – but even if he doesn't, the opening game with Wales will surely come too soon. His club side have apparently already accepted a period without him. "I am disappointed for Joe," said Tony Hanks, the Wasps director of rugby.
"He has developed throughout the season and is one of the stand-out players of the Premiership. So we will miss him."

If it is dreadful news for Wasps, then it hardly represents a disaster to England. Johnson has Danny Care, Paul Hodgson and the fit-again Harry Ellis fighting it out to make the squad (which will be named in two weeks' time). But it is a disappointment – as it is a worry. Delon Armitage and Riki Flutey are only now returning from absences which kept the full-back and centre out of the autumn internationals. Their complaints? Dislocated shoulders. The injury really does seem to be the curse of the Six Nations Rugby union professional at the moment.

Six Nations Rugby ChampionShip

The Six Nations Rugby Championship (referred to as RBS 6 Nations for sponsorship reasons), known before 2000 as the Five Nations Championship, is an annual international rugby union competition involving six European sides: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.
The Six Nations Championship is the successor to the Five Nations and the Home Nations Championship, which was the first international rugby union tournament in the Northern Hemisphere. The winners of the Six Nations are seen as being the European Champions. The event is currently sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Ireland are the current Grand Slam title holders, for the first time since 1948, having won the competition in 2009 by beating all other teams, and winning the Triple Crown by beating England, Scotland and Wales.

Format of Six Nations Rugby Championships

Prior to 1994, teams equal on points shared the Six Nations Rugby Champion Ships. Since then, ties have been broken by considering the points difference of the teams. The rules of the championship further provide that if teams tie on both match points and points difference, the team which scored the most tries wins the championship. If even this decider is tied, the tying teams share the championship. To date, however, match points and points difference have been sufficient to decide the championship.

Victory by any Home Nation over the other three Home Nations is a 'Triple Crown'. The Triple Crown has twice been won on four consecutive occasions, once by Wales in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979 and once by England in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998. England hold the record for the number of Triple Crowns won with 23, followed by Wales with 20, Scotland with 10 and Ireland with 10. Although this achievement has long been a feature of the tournament, it was not until 2006 that a physical trophy, commissioned by the Royal Bank of Scotland, was awarded.

At the end of the tournament a team that finishes at the bottom of the table is said to have won the Wooden Spoon.

Several individual competitions take place under the umbrella of the Six Nations Rugby ChampionShips tournament. The oldest such regular competition is for the Calcutta Cup, contested annually between England and Scotland since 1879. It is named the Calcutta Cup as it is made from melted-down Indian Rupees. Since 1988, the Millennium Trophy has been awarded to the winner of the game between England and Ireland. Since 2007, France and Italy have contested the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy; it was created for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian hero who helped unify Italy. Garibaldi was born in Nizza (now the French city of Nice) in 1807. To Buy & Sell Six Nations Tickets please visit YourTicketMarket.com

Trophies Of Six Nations Rugby Tournament:

The winners of the 6 Nations Rugby are presented with the Six Nations Rugby Championship Trophy. This was originally conceived by the Earl of Westmorland, and was first presented to the winners of the 1993 Six Nations Rugby Championship, France. It is a sterling silver trophy, designed by James Brent-Ward and made by a team of eight silversmiths from the London firm William Comyns; it is valued at £55,000. Although originally silver on the inside, the trophy became so corroded through celebratory champagne fillings] that it is now plated with 22 carat gold for protection.
It has 15 side panels representing the 15 members of the team and with three handles to represent the three officials (referee and two touch judges). The cup has a capacity of 3.75 litres – sufficient for five bottles of champagne. Within the mahogany base is a concealed drawer which contains six alternate finials, each a silver replica of one of the team emblems, which can be screwed on the detachable lid.
Triple Crown Trophy:
As no trophy was historically awarded for winning the Triple Crown, it was often called 'the invisible cup'. In 2006 the primary sponsor of the competition, the Royal Bank of Scotland, commissioned a trophy to be awarded to Triple Crown winners.
The award, a silver dish known as the Triple Crown Trophy, was contested for the first time in the 2006 Six Nations. Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll claimed the trophy for Ireland at Twickenham on March 18 after a last-minute try from Shane Horgan gave Ireland a 28–24 win over England.
Ireland currently hold the Triple Crown after beating Wales 17–15 at the Millennium Stadium on 21 March 2009.
Other trophies:
Several other trophies are contested within the main competition, mostly as long-standing fixtures between pairs of teams.
• Calcutta Cup – England versus Scotland; contested annually since 1879.
• Centenary Quaich – Scotland versus Ireland; contested annually since 1989; a quaich is a Gaelic drinking vessel.
• Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy – France versus Italy; contested since 2007; in memory of Giuseppe Garibaldi.
• Millennium Trophy – England versus Ireland; contested since 1988; presented to celebrate Dublin's millennium in 1988.
• Grand Slam - All nations: awarded when one nation defeats the other five.

Summary of 2009 Rugby Tournament:

Summary of 2009 Rugby Tournament:

The Six Nations Rugby Championship began on 7 February 2009, when England hosted Italy in the earlier of the day's two matches. Ireland played France later that evening, with Scotland versus Wales the following day.

The reigning champions on entering the 2009 Six Nations Rugby Championship were Wales, who won the Grand Slam and Triple Crown in 2008. The winners of both accolades in 2009 were Ireland, with Ronan O'Gara's drop goal leaving the score in the final match against Wales in Cardiff on 21 March at 17–15. Wales's Stephen Jones then missed a late penalty from just inside the Ireland half to leave Wales in fourth position. Ireland's two tries in that match came from captain Brian O'Driscoll and Tommy Bowe scored in quick succession in the 44th and 46th minutes respectively. Paul O'Connell received the Triple Crown and Ireland's captain Brian O'Driscoll lifted the trophy. It was Ireland's first Grand Slam in 61 years, their last one being in 1948. This was achieved in the first 2009 Six Nations Rugby Championship since Declan Kidney was appointed as manager of the Ireland team, succeeding Eddie O'Sullivan who resigned after the previous tournament.

Twelve tries were scored by Ireland throughout the tournament, and five wins left the team on top of the table at the end of the Championship with ten points. They opened with a 30–21 win over France at home stadium Croke Park on 7 February. On 15 February Ireland's second match was a 9–38 beating of Italy at the Stadio Flaminio in Rome. On 28 February, Ireland beat England 14–13 at Croke Park and on 14 March, Ireland beat Scotland 15–22 at Murrayfield Stadium. Then followed the Grand Slam against Wales on 21 March 2009. That game was attended by the President of Ireland Mary McAleese, who presented the trophy, and Taoiseach Brian Cowen. Following the game there were tributes from politicians including Brian Cowen, Leader of the Opposition Enda Kenny and Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Martin Cullen. A civic reception for the team took place outside Dublin's Mansion House on 22 March at 16:30, with 18,000 fans attending alongside Taoiseach Brian Cowen and Dublin's Deputy Lord Mayor Emer Costelloe. 2,000 fans had earlier greeted the team upon their arrival at Dublin Airport. Brian O'Driscoll described 21 March as a “sweet, sweet day”. The game was watched by 945,000 people in Ireland, the highest rating television programme in the country by that stage of 2009. Former coach Eddie O'Sullivan was said to be "delighted" for the team. Brain O'Driscoll was named player of the tournament, beating Italy's Sergio Parisse and Ireland teammate Paul O'Connell. O'Connell was later named captain of the British and Irish Lions team to tour South Africa and containing fourteen members of the Grand Slam winning Irish team on 21 April 2009, describing it as "a great honour".

Italy were the only side to not win a match in the tournament, suffering defeats by twenty points or more against, in addition to Ireland, France (50–8), England (36–11) and Scotland (26–6), while losing 20–15 to Wales. Scotland managed a solitary victory against Italy to finish on 2 points. England, France and Wales all managed to win three in their matches to finish level on six points but England's points difference of +54 granted them second place in the table. Their points tally was boosted by a 36–10 defeat of France and a 26–12 win against Scotland which sealed the Calcutta Cup. Wales' loss to France and later Ireland denied them a second consecutive grand slam.
